The Sketchbook Brigade - Urban Sketchers Tucson

Agua Caliente Park sketch-out
At our latest meeting of the Sketchbook Brigade (a sketcher's Meetup.com group here in Tucson) I suggested to our leader Robin that we add on to our group name Urban Sketchers Tucson, and she agreed!  There is a global organization called Urban Sketchers, and numerous satellite organizations for local groups of urban sketchers.  The global Urban Sketchers is pretty cool, with their motto, "See the world drawing at a time", and they even have a manifesto which outlines their definition of "urban sketching" (which is basically a sketch of a location--it doesn't have to be in a city--done on location).  This falls right into a major component of Sketchbook Brigade activities!

Our most recent sketch-out was last Sunday at Agua Caliente Park on the far north-east side of Tucson.  It was my first time there and I was amazed at what must be hundreds of mature palm trees.

Another recent sketch-out was at the Sweetwater Wetlands where we tagged-along on a meeting of the Tucson Plein Air Painters Society.  As you can imagine, living in the desert tends to draw us to the few wetland areas in Tucson to sketch the novelty of it.

I love to sketch when I travel. Enjoyed your sketches. I am moving to Prescott AZ in November but don't see an Urban Sketchers group there. If I can't find one hope to start one but not sure how. Marlene, Renton WA

Thank you for taking the time to comment on my blog, Marlene! Congratulations on your upcoming move to Prescott! I lived in that area during the mid-to-late 1970's and really enjoyed it, though the area has grown so much since those days. I did a little searching about art groups in Prescott and came up with: http://www.meetup.com/Wine-Women-and-Watercolors/. It's not specifically urban sketching but they might be able to help you!

Hi! I'm working at an architecture firm in Tucson and looking to join a sketching group. I think some of the people in the office would like to join as well. I was wondering if you guys are part of the Sketchbook Artistry Guild, or related somehow? Do you meet monthly to sketch? Can you tell me more about your group? Thanks!

Hi Elizabeth! Yes, we are indeed called The Sketchbook Artistry Guild (used to be The Sketchbook Brigade when this post was written). You can find all the activities the group is involved in on our Meetup site: http://www.meetup.com/TheSketchbookArtistryGuild. There is a regular sketch meeting monthly, called "Sharpen Your Pencils" at La Cocina restaurant downtown on the third Saturday of each month, and additional sketching meetings as people come up with ideas of where and when. We're definitely open to ideas if you have any! I hope to meet you soon!
